7 Day Cleanse

So my good friend at work and I have been doing this diet and tomorrow will be day 7!! It's been tough, very tough but was a GREAT cleanse.. My body feels great, I feel great, and it was a good thing to do jumpstart my diet as I'm getting ready to start Weight Watchers. I just want to maintain, eat healthy, and really use it for portion control!! I'm going to be a bride sooner then later and I will want to look fabulous when that time comes... I also want to be healthy and eat healthy which in return will only add happiness, not self hate.. So check out the diet and tell me what you think! It's a little extreme and VERY tough on your belly, but it's good!! If you read through the diet and seem interested either leave a comment or email me. I made a similar, but different, version of the soup that is acceptable to eat on the diet and it was fabulous!!

The following diet and health program was developed for employees and dependents of General Motors, Inc. and is intended for their exclusive use. This program was developed in conjunction with a grant from U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration. It was field tested at the Johns Hopkins Research Centre and was approved for distribution by the Board of Directors, General Motors Corp. at a general meeting on August 15, 1985. General Motors Corp. wholly endorses this program and is making it available to all employees and families. This program will be available at all General Motors Food Service Facilities. It is management's intention to facilitate a wellness and fitness program for everyone.

This program is designed for a target weight loss of 10-17 lbs per week. It will also improve your attitudes and emotions because of its cleansing systematic effects.
The effectiveness of this seven day plan is that the food eaten burn more calories than they give to the body in caloric value.

This plan can be used as often as you like without any fear of complications. It is designed to flush your system of impurities and give you a feeling of well being. After seven days you will begin to feel lighter because you will be lighter by at least 10 lbs. You will have an abundance of energy and an improved disposition.
During the first seven days you must abstain from all alcoholYou must drink 10 glasses of water each day.

Day One All fruits except bananas. Your first day will consist of all the fruits you want. It is strongly suggested that you consume lots of melons the first day. Especially watermelon and a loupe. If you limit your fruit consumption to melons, your chances of losing three lbs. on first day are very good.

Day Two All vegetables. You are encouraged to eat until you are stuffed with all the raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. There is no limit on the amount or type. For your complex carbohydrate, you will start day two with a large baked potato for breakfast. You may top the potato with one pat of butter.

Day Three A mixture of fruits and vegetables of your choice. Any amount, any quantity. No bananas yet. No potatoes today.

Day Four Bananas and milk. Today you will eat as many as eight bananas and drink three glasses of milk. This will be combined with the special soup which may be eaten in limited quantities.

Day Five Today is feast day. You will eat beef and tomatoes. Eat two 10 oz. portions of lean beef. Hamburger is OK. Combine this with six whole tomatoes. On day five you must increase your water intake by one quart. This is to cleanse your system of the uric acid you will be producing.

Day Six Beef and vegetables. Today you may eat an unlimited amount of beef and vegetables. Eat to your hearts content.

Day Seven Today your food intake will consist of brown rice, fruit juices and all the vegetables you care to consume.

Tomorrow morning you will be 10-17 lbs. lighter than one week ago. If you desire further weight loss, repeat the program again. You may repeat this program as often as you like, however, it is suggested that you are allowed two glasses of white wine in addition to the instructions on the program. You may substitute champagne for white wine. Under no circumstances are you to drink any other alcoholic beverages with the exception of beer which is allowed. Any liquor (bourbon, vodka, rum) is forbidden. Cream drinks are especially forbidden. You may have an occasional cordial such as creme de menthe or schnapps, but you must always limit yourself to two drinks. If you wine, drink only wine that day. If you have beer, drink only beer that day, etc. Alcohol adds empty calories to your diet. However, after the first week it will help your digestion and settle your stomach.

G.M.'S Wonder Soup
The following soup is intended as a supplement to your diet. It can be eaten any time of the day in virtually unlimited quantities. You are encouraged to consume large quantities of this soup.
12 Cus of Water, 6 Large Onions, 2 Green Peppers, Whole Tomatoes (fresh or canned), 1 Head Cabbage, 1 Bunch Celery, 4 Envelopes Lipton Onion Soup Mix, Herbs and Flavouring as desired.

Additional Comments
Vegetables as may be taken in the form of a salad if desired. No dressing except malt, white or wine vinegar, squeezed lemon, garlic, herbs. No more than one tea spoon of oil.
You have been given a recipe for the WONDER SOUP which can be eaten in unlimited quantities. This soup is a supplement while you are on the program and it should be a pleasure to eat. Not everyone likes cabbage, green peppers, calory etc. This recipe is not inflexible. You may substitute vegetables according to your taste. You may add any vegetables you like: asparagus, peas, corn, turnips, green beans, cauliflower, etc. Try to stay away from beans (lima, pinto, kidney, etc.), however, because they tend to be high in calories even though they are very good for you.

Beverages you may consume while on the program :
Water (flavoured with lemon/lime if desired).
Club Soda is OK.
Black Coffee. No cream or cream substitute. No sugar or sweetness.
Black Tea = Herb or Leaf.
Absolutely nothing else except the fruit juices which are part of day seven. No fruit juices before day seven.

How and Why It Works
Day One you are preparing your system for the upcoming programme. Your only source of nutrition is fresh or canned fruits. Fruits are nature's perfect food. They provide everything you could possibly want to sustain life except total balance and variety.
Day Two starts with a fix of complex carbo-hydrates coupled with an oil dose. This is taken in the morning for energy and balance. The rest of day two consists of vegetables which are virtually calorie free and provide essential nutrients and fibre.
Day Three eliminates the potato because you get your carbohydrates from the fruits. You system is now prepared to start burning excess pounds. You will still have cravings which should start to diminish by day four.
Day Four, bananas, milk and soup sound the strangest and least desirable. You're in for a surprise. You probably will not eat all the bananas allowed. But they are there for the potassium you have lost and the sodium you may have missed the past three days. You will notice a definite loss of desire for sweets. You will be surprised how easy this day will go.
Day Five, Beef and tomatoes. The beef is for iron and proteins, the tomatoes are for digestion and fibre. Lots and lots of water purifies your system. You should notice colourless urine today. Your allowance calls for the equivalent of five "quarter ponders". Do not feel you have to eat all this beef. You must eat the six tomatoes.
Day Six is similar to day five, Iron and proteins from beef, Vitamins and fibre from vegetables. By now your system is in a total weight loss inclination. There should be a noticeable difference in the way you look today, compared to day one.
Day Seven finished off the program like a good cigar used to finish off Victorian meals, except much healthier. You have your system under control and it should thank you for the flushing and cleaning you just gave it.

How come noone has entered a coment? I am really curious about this diet. Today my husband started the master cleanse. Sounds like a good benefit from it but oh i could never do that. This diet sounds awesome! Cant wait to try it!

Did you try this yet? and did it work for you? im very interested

I'm planning to try this out in a week. So if all goes well I'll let you know in 2 weeks how it went.

I want to know about the soup. Do you HAVE to eat it? Can you go without??

Any results??

I'm doing it right now, it's hard but I'm still determined to finish the week. My co-woreker tried it and she quit like 4 or 5 days in. So, if you're looking for a challenge you'll want to try this.

what about exercise? is it allowed?

Hey, me and my girlfriend are about to embark on this 7 day cleanse tomorrow. As I read however, it says for day 5 eat beef and tomatoes. Now I was wondering can we exchange the beef to chicken instead?

Charmed By Abstraction said...

I have just started day three of the diet and this morning I was approximately 3.5lbs lighter then when I started the diet.

I am doing this not so much for the weight loss (although I did put on 5 unwanted lbs over the holidays and already had a few too many LB's) but more for the cleanse I felt my body needed.

SO FAR it isn't that hard, I like that every day is different. Last night I was really craving sweets and could not wait to have some fruit for breakfast today. I am also really missing meat and yogurt, I'm assuming my body is craving the protein its been lacking so i'm going to make sure to load up on some more protein rich veggies today. Yesterday I felt healthier and more energized so it seems to be working!

I am actually really excited about the banana day tomorrow, it sounds so weird but I love bananas and usually they are one of the fruits you are told to limit. I am not sure how it will go with the soup.

Also I hate cabbage soup and did not put cabbage in my soup. i may add spinach to my next batch (since I'm craving protein and both are high in protein)

I decided to post since this has been up for 2 years and plenty of people have been curious and yet no one had responded. I will make sure to check back when I'm done with my 7 days.

I am even tempted to restart it and incorporate wine like it says... but that part makes me worried this is all a big joke... I will definitely let you know my progress next wednesday!

Okay, it is now the end of day five for me. or "feast day" and it sucked. I'm not a huge fan of tomatoes but I managed to eat them all. I couldn't eat all the beef.

On the morning of day 4 i was 7lbs lighter then when I started but then I ate 7 bananas that day (one under the limit)and a bowl of soup and this morning I was 5lbs lighter than day 1. For me it isn't about the weight loss, as I stated before but this diet has been very challenging and the promised 10 lbs would be a nice reward. the drastic change also makes me wonder what day 7 will do.

Most of the day I was in a great mood and feeling great but now i'm tired and still hungry but dont feel like having soup or any of the beef i put in the fridge. I am really craving yogurt and miss the milk that I was allowed yesterday.

I have decided against restarting the diet but I am going to maintain a strict healthy diet. I embarked on this journey because I was feeling bloated and lethargic after the holidays and all the indulgences. for the most part I am feeling better I will post again on my 7th day and follow up on the 8th day with my total weight loss

My question is about the beef - can I flavor it with seasonings, or am I just supposed to eat straight, bland beef all day?

Anonymous said...

charmed, what happened? i am going to start this, this weekend. i'm hopeful since i like pretty much anything on the list.

Charmed By Abstraction said...

you can season the beef with and type of herbs. if you have more questions this site has a lot more traffic:

http://www.fitnesstipsforlife.com/gm-diet.html

I lost 10 lbs from the wednesday that I started to the wednesday that I finished... but it was mostly water weight. I transitioned to an extremely healthy diet and realized that I had really only lost 5 true lbs but the other 5 lbs fell of within the next two weeks so it was a great kick start.

It's not necessary to call that person an idiot, "anonymous". I CAN'T drink milk because I am allergic, but I still did the cleanse. It worked just fine substituting soy milk for regular milk. My friend did the cleanse with me and did not eat the tomatoes with the beef. It worked just fine for her, as well.

Jules--I am too. I've been doing some research and have seen some people substitute salmon (pescatarian), because what you are looking for is the protein. So, I would say go with tofu in place of beef, or maybe chick peas?

What about working out??!!!

Anonymous said...

I am not sure about this 7-day-cleanse! I am on day 4. This morning the scale showed the same numbers as day 1. I didnt lose hope, I will finish this cleanse! I am sick of eating bananas, and I have 2 more left! The cabbage soup is making me so bloated and I keep having to run to the bathroom. Maybe the real weight loss secret is in the cabbage soup! I should have just had cabbage soup for 7 days, but who wants to have the runs for 7 straight days? Cant wait for beef and tomatoes tomorrow; I love both! I have plenty of soup left, I will save it for days 6 and 7 which allow vegetables! I really hope to lose a few lbs.

Anonymous said...

Who came up with this 7-day-cleanse? Yesterday, the cabbage soup made me bloated and gave me the runs. Today, I weighed myself before starting day 5 and I am 2 lbs heavier than on day 1. I guess this cleanse is NOT FOR ME!!!!

Anonymous said...

Finished the 7 day cleanse and I am 1 lb heavier than when I started! :-(

Anonymous said...

What are you allowed to drink on this 7 day cleanse? Can I have tea with sweetener? Can I drink 10 calorie energy drinks? Those are 2 biggies for me. Need my caffeine!!!

Brit said...

So the plan is to start this cleanse on tomorrow. Hoping for positive resullts. Don't think I'm going to eat that soup though

Anonymous said...

So, I'm on day five...gotta admit I don't feel anymore energetic though.

Anonymous said...

I am on day four. Everything has been going completely fine since I started, except for the occasional wanting other foods. However, when I woke up this morning, I felt very light headed and shaky. I've been drinking all the water necessary and eating everything the diet says. I ate 3 bananas because I felt like I just needed to get something in my system. I'm feeling a little better now. I'm hoping tomorrow meat will do me good. I've lost 5 lbs since the day I started. Like others say I think it is mainly just water weight I am loosing. What I have gotten out of this, is eating less, more often throughout the day. If I continue to drink lots of water and cut my food short, it will be a lot healthier. I also think this diet gives you the ability to gain control over your mind when you are "bored" hungry. Of coarse, eating healthy is always a good idea.

Anonymous said...

Also...I do not recommend working out while doing this seven day cleanse. Maybe the first few days are okay but by the time you are half way through, at least to me, pretty much all my energy is gone.

Dana said...

This worked great for me when I did it. A good Jumpstart!

Anonymous said...

Heyy FYI how about you all just cut down on portions, eat more fruits and veggies, less carbs, less suagr and WORKOUT. Here is a hint once you stop the "diet" and start eating your normal diet you will gain every single pound back. During the 7 days your body will be starving and in turn store what you actually do eat to fat because it won't be sure the next time it will be fed. It all about portion control and moderation. So once you go back to eating cake and cookies don't be surprised when you notice you're gaining all the weight you lost and more. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Anonymous said...

This is one of the dumbest diets you can try. A diet to lose weight should consist of eating nutrient-dense foods and working out. Going on this diet will only make you gain the weight you lost back and depriving your body from the essential nutrients it needs. Losing 3 pounds in a day or in a week is extreme.

Anonymous said...

Did this cleanse with my roommates and it worked wonders! Went from 163-151 and havent put anything back on. I suggest it for all.. if you have the will power.

Anonymous said...

I am on day four and I love it, I have more energy and I am down 8lbs, I am sure some is simple water weight but it is a good start. I added two small eggs in the morning on day two and 3 no fats. I needed more protein and I don't think it had a negative effect(from my own chickens). In the soup I used organic vegetable stock and every vegetable I could find, kale, spinach, mushroom, peas, green beans etc and I look forward to it. I started the soup on day 2 and will use it every day. I am going to substitute venison for the beef, can't wait! I am also working out

Evie said...

Well here goes nothing! I've been trying to lose those last 10 lbs since having my third baby and this looks attainable. When I woke up on day 2 I had lost 4 lbs!! Great! I am now at the end of day 3 and seem to have gained it all back. I am not straying and following everything exactly. I think I should eat more greens though. Hopefully the scale in the morning is kinder to me...we'll see

Evie said...

Woke up this morning and am again 4 lbs lighter! Today is banana and milk day so excited about that. Still have lots of soup left too. Feeling pretty good so far. Not really hungry, more a mind thing going on. It's a real test of will power when you're feeding a family of 5,

Evie said...

K, so just woke up on day 5 and am a total of 6 lbs lighter. Feeling good. Yesterday was an easy day and surprisingly, I didn't have many cravings. I only ate 6 small bananas and 3 glasses of milk. Also 2 nice bowls of that delicious soup. I've also implemented green tea. Off to go buy some organic beef!

I did this cleanse at the end of the summer. I did not want to lose any weight, I jsut wanted to feel healthier. Some days were harder than others, but I started it again for the second time after the holidays. I was not sure when to start, but I woke up this morning and it just felt right.

I am a vegetarian and do beans and nuts instead of the beef. I also do not drink milk so I substituted almonds milk. I love cleanses where you actually eat food instead of starving yourself. I find that the days you can eat fruits and veggies it is not that difficult to go to parties. Just because you are on a cleanse does not mean you have to hide away. The first time I did the cleanse I went to 2 birthday parties and didn't break it. I encourage anyone who wants to try this. This is the best cleanse I have found so far. Good luck and have fun!

I did this diet for 21 days after my first child was born (1 yr later and I still couldnt lose the last of the baby weight I had gained) It is the same as the cabbage soup diet which you are encouraged to eat as much soup as possible. I do think it was hard at first but VERY rewarding. I lost 21 lbs in 21 days. I kept it off by slowly introducing other foods again. I ate the soup with other meals for probably a week as well as portion control. I am starting it again tomorrow! (Its been 4 months since my daughter was born and my breast milk supply is dwindling so I am going to do it much sooner this time! Here I go again!)

I'm on day 6 of this cleanse and I feel great. I've lost 8 lbs...for me it wasn't so much about the lbs...but the beginning of what I want to be a lifestyle change..while losing weight. My question is...I'm wondering where to go from here...I know eating right...but does anybody have any suggestions on what they did after...like calorie wise?? Foods not to eat...and so forth...

Anonymous said...

I'm on day 4 of this cleanse, and so far it's been very tolerable. I feel lighter already, and I have a lot of energy still. Even today on day 4 I did 7 miles on my elliptical machine. I think so far that this is a great jumpstart to any dieting, more for the lifestyle change than anything. I plan on starting back with weight watchers once I'm done with this.

Anonymous said...

I am at the end of day 2. Feeling pretty good. Haven't weighed myself yet..waiting until the end....going to the bathroom more than usual. The soup is tolerable. Missing my sweets and bread and skim milk. Hoping it will all be worth it:) I will let you know at the end of day 7!

Anonymous said...

I tried the cleanse and tomorrow will be day 7 for me. So far I have lost 11lbs and I worked out during the week. It's a great way to reset your body. I don't think it's all water weight that you lose since I'm not one to take in my required amount of water. I used some great herb flavorings on my beef and found new ways to eat veggies! The soup sucks but at least it is only eaten on one day unlike the other "cabbage soup" diets. I would definitely do this again because my energy levels went up and I generally felt healthier!

I am on day 5 and have lost 7lbs with this cleanse. All of the weight came off in the first two days (3lbs after day one and 4lbs after day two). There has been no change since then.

I love this cleanse because it has got me into the habit of eating a healthier diet, I don't feel hungry as much of crave sweets a lot. My face is also a lot clearer since starting the cleanse. I don't feel like I have a lot of energy though.

Anonymous said...

I am on Day 6! One more day...I have lost 9lbs. I am surprised that my taste/craving for sweets has diminished.. I feel like I am eating healthier, and on a good start to losing more weight..I would like to lose a total of 20lbs...this cleanse has helped jump start my journey:)

My roommate and I are on Day 6 right now. I woke up this morning lightheaded and dizzy simply because I didn't have any sugar and I believe I didn't drink enough water yesterday. However I have lost 7lbs being on this diet. It is super hard because you crave so many things. If it weren't for my roommate I would have cheated, but with her, I feel like if I cheat, I disappoint her, which I don't want to do. The soup is only for day 4, not all the days. Also, Day 5, we are not fans of tomatoes, AT ALL, so we didn't even come close to eating 6, however we tried. We are losing weight. I hope every one is careful when dieting of course. This diet does work, if it is done correctly.

I hate to tell you this, but this GM WONDER DIET is an urban myth. General Motors was contacted by a journalist, did some research, and concluded that no one at the company has ever heard of this diet. Not in the 1980's, not ever.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/30/opinion/30iht-edcohen.html?_r=0

What you have here is a version of the Cabbage Soup "Diet" which health professionals can find no basis to endorse, and has been investigated as a hoax diet because it lacks any basis in truth or fact. You can lose weight by any extreme measure, but you are not losing it on this diet for ANY of the reasons claimed above.

There might not be much wrong with eating fruit all day, or eating cabbage soup, but the information posted in pink above and purporting to be designed by trained doctors at John Hopkins hospital is ENTIRELY FALSE!!! Do your research. Never believe anything just because you read it on the Internet!!

"It is a monotonous, short-term fix, severely lacking in nutrients, which will result in a weight loss that is primarily water and not the essential fat loss that is so important to improving health," says Connie Diekman, MEd, RD, director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis.

Diekman worries that diets like the Cabbage Soup Diet keep people in the "yoyo" cycle of losing and regaining weight.

As a registered dietitian, she urges dieters to find another plan that is balanced, varied, and includes regular physical activity. The only positive aspect of the Cabbage Soup Diet plan is that it may get people to eat more vegetables, Diekman says.

Just started today with my mom! I am a total fruit person, so Day 1 wasn't too bad. I definitely noticed an energy loss and got a headache in the afternoon. I think that's partially because I wasn't drinking enough water. My biggest problem with this day is that I got bored of the fruit that I had in my house. Berry smoothie, peach cups, and clementine oranges get pretty bland. Also, I had a ton of delicious, non-fruit things in my house that kept tempting me. No upset stomach or anything like that, which I'm thankful for. I'm excited for Day 2 and will let you all know how that goes!

I have completed this cleanse 4 times in a little less than a year. Needless to say, I am an advocate for it. But let's use some common sense. This is NOT a miracle diet. If done correctly, you WILL lose weight, but how much weight depends largely on how strict you are with the guidelines and how much weight you have to lose. (For instance, a 120 pound female is probably not going to lose 10 pounds.) Despite the restriction of food and weight loss, though, I do not recommend this cleanse as a diet/weight loss tool. I think of it as a jump start to an overall healthy diet and exercise rountine. The weight loss you experience along with the achievement of sticking to this strict diet should be used as motivation to maintain or continue weight loss through a healthy diet and exercise. If you think you're going to do this for a week and then return to unhealthy ways, don't bother doing it at all. But if you have serious goals and need a push in the right direction, this is for you! Give it a shot!

Finished Day 2 today with mom. The baked potato, even though typically not a breakfast food, was delicious. I was really hungry throughout the day and since I'm not as much a veggie person as a fruit person, today was much harder than yesterday. I drank more water, which was good. Still low energy and a minor headache. Didn't work out yesterday or today due to low energy and headaches but hopefully will tomorrow. I'm glad tomorrow is a mix of foods!

So this is definitely the cabbage soup diet and (I don't know why) apparently eating the soup is key to losing the weight, not just eating the foods specified for each day. I'm on day 3 and so far so good, I've lost 2lbs. I did cheat a little bit having an unexpected lunch out yesterday. Although I had a salad without dressing, it did have nuts and goats cheese and I had 2 cookies. Still happy with the results thus far

I'm always up for a new diet/fitness / exercise/ cleanse, and when my boyfriend said HE wanted to cleanse, I was very excited as he is NOT a health nut like me. I'm finishing day 1. I worked out super light but yes to headaches and some less energy. I usually consume a lot of food in a day even if it's healthy, so I'm hoping I'm not overdoing the fruit even though I'm supposed to have lots. I'll see how the rest goes but I am prepped, soup is cooked, and veggies are ready for day 2. IF YOU ARE NOT PREPPED AND HAVE THE NECESSARY FOODS AVAILABLE, YOU WILL NOT BE SUCCESSFUL so stock up !!!

Unknown said...

The reason the diet calls for the baked potato bc the carbs are slower digesting and your body needs the carbs to give your body energy while not increasing your blood sugar levels so high possibly like day 1. I think your body will thank you for the potato. Eat all the veggies to your hearts content after... Btw NO OTHER DIETS TELL YOU EAT POTATOES I'm just grateful lol

Is there any problem if you switch day 1 and day 2 accidentally? Today was my first day, and I started with eating only vegetables and the soup for the whole day, thinking that it is vegetables for day 1.

did the cleanse. 5.5 lbs down?... i know its not 10-17, but i dont have that much to lose, and if I go any lower itll be slow and gradual. Im actually going to stick with a modified version of this cleanse for a few more days incorporating more lean protein because my endurance for exercise was definitely not at its best during the main 7 days

I'm on day 2 and I already lost 4 pounds!! Yeah sure I feel nauseous and I could really go for some country fried steak but I spent $100 dollars for this whole week, that's crazy! But I feel as if this cleanse really is worth it and with a really supportive family, i feel that i can persevere through it. I'm excited to see how much I will weigh on my last day!! :)

Well, weigh in day today.

I was pleased to have lost 10lbs.

I have not had the intestinal problems as everyone else, but I have a stubborn bowel anyway.

I have pre-diet arrangements for weekend but straight back on programme afterwards, and not to overdo it.

I love it but find the soup a bit bland.

I have done this cleanse a few times...except I use chicken instead of beef and only eat the soup on day 7....It is very hard to workout after day 4. I have added boiled eggs on Day 5, and humus on day 3.. first two times I hit about 10 lbs. Third time, day 5 and I havent lost a thing....very frustrating.
